Whenever a prominent honors show draws close, there’s always a demand for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and delight the hearts of followers with niche passions.
My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications successfully include many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category during that awards season
- Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Just some brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
