19 of the Russian's 21 victories have been achieved on hard surfaces

A resurgent the Russian player won his first championship for 882 days with a win over opponent Moutet in the Almaty Open title decider.

The Russian, a ex- top-ranked player, has had a difficult year, achieving just one match at the big events and experiencing a meltdown at the American major.

His varied form on the tennis tour - and struggles with his serve in specific - resulted in him exiting of the top ten and finally splitting with long-term trainer Cervara.

Currently collaborating with Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, Medvedev has consistently improved in the last few weeks - peaking in a closely contested competitive win over opponent Corentin Moutet.

This marks his initial title following the Rome competition and maiden on a hard surface since March of 2023.

The win also signifies Medvedev has achieved 21 victories at 21 different events.

"For the first time I'm at a tournament with my children together, so to get a championship is particularly special," commented ranked player Medvedev.

"This victory is in tribute of my younger daughter her name, because the first title I achieved when my child her name was born was for her."

The tennis star, the former major winner, had been defeated in his last six championship matches, featuring in the German tournament in the past months.

Medvedev's defensive strategy and regular reactions on court had caused observers to question if his ability to compete at the top level was over.

Yet the 29-year-old has altered his approach in the last few weeks, striving to approach the net and compete assertively, supported by an better service.

Medvedev came back from a disadvantage in the initial set against the difficult Frenchman, taking 4 of the last five exchanges to go ahead.

Both players exchanged breaks in the second set before the challenger, striving for his first tour victory, took control to force a decider.

The opponent defended four early-game opportunities in a close third set before the champion won the break to that score to close out the victory.

Fittingly, Medvedev earned the title with a point at the net area, with his opponent failing to control a shot after a lengthy match.
