England along with Wales Placed in the Same Group for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was overseen by rugby legends including former All Black Dan Carter.

England together with their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in the same group for the World Cup in 2027, setting up a highly-anticipated early encounter in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Group F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw mirrors their famous clash in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at England's home ground played a part in the hosts' shock group stage elimination.

Key Group Pairings

The Irish and Scotland have likewise been drawn in a pool once again, replicating the situation from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, Ireland claimed a convincing win, with Scotland unable to progress to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Portugal, who each impressed as surprise packages in France, complete that Pool D.

Significantly, the winners of these two groups are kept apart from holders and world number one the Springboks until the final, presuming the Springboks win their own group.

Tournament Ramifications

Should the pools play out according to the current global standings, other leading contenders like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from both the English and Ireland until the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on that side of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Hosts Face Major Fixture

Hosts the Wallabies have been drawn alongside their great rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Pool A.

The Wallabies will open the World Cup in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee fixture aimed at launch the competition.

Elsewhere, reigning champions South Africa have drawn the Azzurri, the Lelos and the Oaks. France are in a pool with Japan, future hosts the United States and Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will take on the Flying Fijians, Spain and the Canadian team as the World Cup grows to twenty-four nations from the 20 who competed in France.

This edition will introduce a last-16 round for the first time in the competition's history.

Although the winner of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the game's biggest beasts early on, they will have to face the second-placed team from Pool B – most likely the Italians – in the first knockout round.

Four of the other six pool winners will face a team that finished third from the pool stages.
