Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several access tunnels leading to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces participating in this operation for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among a great many British troops stationed over the holidays. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, highlights how British military are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military executed what it termed a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
