An individual profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader just before it was publicly declared, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of the event.
Market Movement in Forecasts
Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the close of the month rose in the time leading up to President Donald Trump declared on January 3rd that Maduro had been apprehended.
One account, which became a member in December and took four positions, all on Venezuela, earned over $436K from a starting bet of $32.5K.
It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Probability Spikes Before Announcement
Platform data shows that participants put the odds of a political change at just under 7% in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.
Yet the market's assessment had increased to over 10% by late Friday night and surged in the morning of the next day, indicating a sharp shift in market sentiment right before the social media post was made.
"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a bet based on confidential knowledge," said an industry expert.
A small number of other traders also made large payouts from similar wagers.
